The Writer

Picture
Hi. I’m Rena. I’m a writer-librarian and small business owner (Big Bend Collectibles). I joined Woodhaven Middle School in 2016; and I’m going on my 8th season of coordinating Story Time at Alberta Beach Public Library. Prior to joining the library world, I worked as a manager and communication specialist managing a museum and growing a successful Farmers’ Market. Longing for a career, in which I could combine my education in communication and business management with my passion for writing and children’s literature and viola I made the jump to education (a natural fit for a curious soul!).

Creativity, growth and play are the backbone to my work, whether I’m penning a technology grant, reading the hottest new picture book, or running a series of makerspace challenges.  I believe we learn best, especially children, when we co-create together. As such, I run a weekly Write Club at Woodhaven Middle School and landed an ATLE (Alberta Technology Leaders in Education) grant to support a multimedia journalism pilot project. This project, launched in late May 2018, will see 12, grade eight students under my lead learn what is takes to become a 21st century journalist while rising the profile of their school internally and externally (check back for progress!). If you can’t tell, I’m super excited about this project.

I’m an active member of SCBWI (Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators) and the Writers’ Guild of Alberta (served on their board and youth committee). Recently, I joined a new initiative, the Creative Arts Society to support the arts in my local community as the Society’s secretary. I’ve had the honour of serving as a literary awards juror.  I can be found on Twitter, Pinterest, Facebook and Instagram.

Thank you for stopping by. I’m available for presentations, residencies and workshops. Please see my book me page for further information. Of course, feel free to connect with me online or shoot me an email.
